I have a little house with big yards front and back in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. My fantasy is to to completely eliminate the lawn and fill up the whole space with prairie plants, natives, hardy perennials, a bench or two, walkways, arbors, ground cover, raised beds, and other pretty things. And do all that mostly by myself, organically, on a limited budget, without wrecking my body or quitting my day job. This plan is embraced by my significant other, who is the reluctant but fearless lawn care expert. Toward my goal, I carve ever larger border beds, keep the ants and the japanese beetles mostly at bay, and try not to kill anything I’m fond of. Please feel free to comment.
